SF & Unusual Images (1)

Although I'm best known as a space artist, I produce many types of art and illustration -- especially science fiction and fantasy

Below is an image entitled 'Ezekiel's Wheels', which I painted for a UFO article. It shows a ufological interpretation of the prophet's biblical visitation of 'Wheels Within Wheels', with a crystal dome (mothership?) above.

Now available as a print - go to the Prints page for more details.

Ezekiel's Wheels

In common with many other space artists, I have a love of prehistory and, in particular, dinosaurs. This was originally a private commission entitled 'Out of the Fire', in which a small Ornithomimus gets a nasty shock after climbing a steep cliff to avoid the lava flow below. . .

However, for the cover of Beyond SF magazine I added time- travelling tourists.

Produced some years ago for a self-promotion pack, this is a self-portrait of myself as a Time Traveller ~ having my camera stolen by a pterosaur! The painting deliberately included as many elements as possible: rock formations, vegetation, water, sky, hardware, prehistoric creatures and a human figure.

NEW: This has now been used as the cover for the May 2004 issue of Analog magazine.

One of my best-known SF images is probably the one at right ~ my interpretation of H.G.Wells' War of the Worlds, with Fighting Machines attacking the ironclad Thunderchild. The original, landscape-format version (bought by the late Bob Monkhouse) was done for the musical album, but due to a dispute was never used. It then appeared in New Challenge of the Stars, and in many other publications. (For the full story, see Hardyware!) The latest use is on the packaging of The Learning Channel's video in the 'Great Books' series (USA). (From the private collection of J. Donald.) War of the Worlds

In September 2007 I was Artist Guest of Honour at Eurocon 2007, the annual European SF convention, this year held in Copenhagen. So I produced a special painting, in acrylics with impasto rocks in the foreground, entitled 'The Little Mermaid, 5 Billion AD' ~ which was very well received! Of course the chances of this statue stillexisting when our Sun becomes a red giant are just about nil, but we can assume either a fantasy (enchantment) or a science-fictional (alien technology) scenario. . .

NB: A print of this, on canvas paper, is now available. Please
e-mail for details.
