Spaceguard UK
On Saturday, 29 September 2001, Sir Patrick Moore opened the new Spaceguard Centre near Knighton, Powys in mid-Wales.

Spaceguard UK is dedicated to the promotion of the international Spaceguard programme, whose aim is to publicise the danger posed to Earth by the possible impact of an asteroid or comet. The new Centre is intended to become a world-class facility for astronomical research and science education, with a specific emphasis on the Spaceguard Project. Its Director is Jonathan (Jay) Tate.

For further information and many illustrations of the asteroid threat, please go to the Asteroids page.

The Spaceguard Centre

Andrew Thompson, owner of the observatory and Jay Tate's partner in this project, arrives by helicopter.

A large group gathers, and chats animatedly... At far right, Duncan Steel (author of Target Earth. etc.) talks to Mark Bailey, Director of Armagh Observatory.

Sir Patrick is greeted by Mr Roger Bright, Mayor of Knighton
From left to right: Jay Tate, Mr Harry Atkinson (Chairman of the government's NEO Task Force), Sir Patrick, and Mr Lembit Öpik, MP (a strong proponent of Spaceguard and grandson of Dr E.J.Opik, a famous astrophysicist) hold a conversation...

...which continues...

... until it is time for Sir Patrick to perform the opening ceremony.

Speech!

The Plaque

Cuttings galore; and the opening featured widely in the media, including Sky News that evening

while the Gift Shop has several prints (and a book) by one David A Hardy!
